Brainrot Tower Defense How to Evolve Units
Copy checks, materials, and why a grey evolve button is a missing requirement, not lag.
Evolution is the step after upgrade in Brainrot Tower Defense, and it is the one new players mash by accident. The Roblox page says it in one line: place your Brainrot, earn cash, evolve, win. Shock Wave Studio made evolve a separate prompt. It fires when that unit meets copy, level, or material checks. It does not fire because you spent cash on a Common ten times. If the button is grey, you are missing a requirement. This page is the checklist. Placement and Auto Play stay on how to play. Combination crafts that look like evolves sit on combinations.
The game is released. Weekly patches can add an evolve path or raise a level cap (120 is the example already on weekly patches). Invite friends into a 20-player server if you want extra cash on the same wave while you farm the copies.
Upgrade is not evolve
Click a placed unit. Cash from kills buys upgrades on that tower only. Damage, range, and SPA move. The portrait can look bigger. That is still the base form. Evolve is a second button or prompt that appears when the unit’s own recipe is legal: enough copies in the inventory, a level floor, event materials, or a Combination input. Grey means “not yet.” It does not mean “click faster.”
Some units never evolve. They upgrade in place and stop. Dragon Cannelloni is the classic example: huge on placement, then it plateaus. Evolving a B-tier into an A-tier is a real pattern on other copies, which is why you check the evolved form before you dump gems. A B that becomes A is worth the copies. A C that explodes for 50k at max (Garama and Madundug) is not.
What the checks usually are
Copy checks: you own more than one of the same Brainrot. The extra sits in inventory, not on the path. Feeding the only seated Graipus into an evolve you do not understand is how accounts cry on Discord. Level checks: the unit has to be upgraded far enough, which is why a level-cap bump is an evolve week, not a “sell everything” week. Material checks: event items, Combination junk (glue, plunger, ketchup), or shop currencies. If the prompt names a material you do not have, leave the map and open the event shop or the Combination machine. Do not reroll traits hoping the button turns green. Traits are a different system on traits.
Prismatic and Rainbow are rarity paints, not evolve paths. A Prismatic Saturno is still Saturno. Read Prismatic rarity so you do not burn a rare paint on an evolve that eats the copy. Guest 666 and Clockzilla have their own obtain loops; they are not “evolve Dragon until 666.” Those pages are Guest 666 and Clockzilla.
When to evolve in a real match
Do it between waves or in the lobby, not while a portal is leaking in PvP. The animation is a window where the tower is not shooting. Story maps forgive that. Endless and 1v1 do not. Farm should already be printing so the evolved form has cash to upgrade again. Evolving a broke carry just gives you a prettier leak.
Priority: evolve the unit that already has a job on best units. Farm first if the recipe is Los Tralalero. Slow next if Major Combination is ready. AoE or Saturno after that. Starter evolves can wait until starters are replaced. Codes still buy the copies; redeem working codes before you sit on a grey button wondering why the account feels stuck.
Treat evolve as a recipe, not a panic button. If it is grey, write down the missing copy or material, finish that requirement, then press it once. Mashing does not skip the check, and it will not spawn a Secret.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Why is the evolve button grey?
A copy, level, or material check is missing. It is not lag. Upgrade is a different button that spends wave cash.
Is Combination the same as evolve?
No. Combination is the lobby machine with recipes. Evolve is a prompt on a placed unit. See combinations.
Should I evolve during Endless or PvP?
Prefer a gap between waves. The animation is downtime. PvP notes are on PvP beta.
Do Prismatic or Rainbow copies evolve differently?
They keep the paint. The recipe is still the unit’s. Read Prismatic rarity before you feed a rare roll.
Which unit should I evolve first?
The one with a real job: farm, slow, or your seated carry. Rankings are on best units.
